Alas, Smith & Joel
Filmmaker Kevin Smith, like everyone these days, has a big fat blog about his stupid life. A few years ago he made the movie "Clerks" for the price of a cup of coffee and two DVDs from the discount porn bin. Since then he's made some movies that sucked and some that rocked.
Having made "Clerks" in 1994, it's taken Mr. Smith 12 years to come around to exploiting his authorial debut with a sequel. In Hollywood, this is called restraint.
"Clerks II" received an eight minute standing ovation form the audience at the Cannes Film Festival. That might mean the movie doesn't suck. During another press screening of "Clerks II", veteran Good Morning America reviewer Joel Siegel decided to get up and leave, 40 minutes into the film. He also shouted at the audience and dropped the F-bomb. All because of a gag that sounds like a vulgar thing is happening, with the pay-off being an entirely esoteric explaination (i.e. the dude left before he found out that the bit was not the horror he presumed it was). Kevin Smith writes about this in his boring blog. He writes about it with superior wit and accuracy.
The best part is, after reading Mr. Smith's post, you can listen to his appearance on the Opie and Anthony radio show. This really goes from surreal to surrealer, as the co-hosts and Kevin Smith share a three-way phone conversation with Joel Siegel. Mr. Siegel seems to loose his mind completely about midway through. The frightening and astonishing part is that Mr. Siegel is the only one who doesn't seem to notice. Anyway, it's a good read and a fantastic listen (the listening part is best done while playing your favourite desk-top game).
